I was absolutely delighted when hearing, that a booklet was being complied in recognition of the Irish Street Band. Thirty years the band has established a wonderful reputation within the loyalist community, here and aboard. it has come through a transitional period were the uniform and the name has changed, but its dedication to the people it represents, always remains. It has been like a family to many young men who have enlisted in its ranks and wore the uniform. It is also safe to say that nothing would have been achieved without each of them, and a great support of the local community. Many of them I know will be mentioned in this complication. I have many happy memories whilst being a member of the Sons of Ulster and the East Bank protestant boys. I remember being slightly inebriated after a parade, following the orange and blue uniforms onto the bus for the journey home, only to find myself an hour later marching though Antrim with the Steeple Flute band, who until that moment, I didn't relies had the same style of uniform. I also remember celebrating at the Memorial Hall, the fact we had come second in a melody flute band completion. Everyone was approaching us to congratulate the band on the achievement, we conveniently forgot to inform them that only two bands took part. But mostly I remember the sincere commitment and dedication of every member, who collectively assured the bands success. A special mention also to Tommy Lynch who had a dream for the bands future, and through his enthusiasm was able to make it a reality. The Irish Street band has had a wonderful past, but also has a wonderful future! Ken Gibson |
